Handicap Ramps

Accessible ramp installations meeting ADA standards.

EM Construction designs and builds ADA-compliant handicap ramps for residential and commercial properties throughout New York and New Jersey. Our ramps provide safe, dignified, and code-compliant access for individuals with disabilities, meeting both federal ADA requirements and local NYC building code standards.

Accessibility is not optional — it is the law. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and New York City’s Building Code mandate accessible routes for all public accommodations, commercial facilities, and multifamily residential buildings. Non-compliant properties face regulatory penalties, civil liability, and potential loss of business. EM Construction helps you meet your accessibility obligations with professionally designed and constructed ramp systems.

Our Handicap Ramp Services

Concrete Ramp Construction
We build cast-in-place concrete ramps that are durable, low-maintenance, and well-suited to New York’s demanding climate. Our ramps are formed to the precise slopes, widths, and landing dimensions required by ADA and local code, with broom-finish non-slip surfaces and properly integrated edge protection.

Precast Modular Ramp Systems
For properties where a permanent concrete ramp is not appropriate, we install high-quality precast modular aluminum or concrete ramp systems that can be configured to suit the specific geometry of your entrance. These systems are structurally sound, code-compliant, and can be removed or reconfigured if your needs change.

Masonry & Brick Ramp Construction
Brick and block ramps complement the architecture of historic and traditional buildings. We build masonry ramp structures on proper concrete footings with non-slip surface treatments and code-compliant handrails.

Ramp Repair & Resurfacing
Existing ramps that are structurally sound but showing surface deterioration — cracked concrete, heaved pavers, or worn non-slip surfaces — can be repaired or resurfaced to restore safety and compliance without full replacement.

Handrail Installation
ADA standards require handrails on both sides of ramps with a rise greater than six inches. We install galvanized or stainless-steel handrails at the correct height (34 to 38 inches), with proper extensions beyond the top and bottom of the ramp, and graspable profiles meeting ADA requirements.

Truncated Dome Detectable Warning Surfaces
At the base of ramps that connect to vehicle circulation areas, ADA requires truncated dome warning surfaces to alert visually impaired users to the transition from pedestrian to vehicular space. We install cast-in-place or surface-applied dome systems in contrasting colors.

ADA Requirements We Design To

– Maximum slope: 1:12 (one inch of rise per 12 inches of run)
– Minimum clear width: 36 inches (60 inches preferred at passing zones)
– Maximum rise for a single ramp run: 30 inches
– Level landings at top, bottom, and all direction changes: minimum 60 x 60 inches
– Edge protection: curbs, walls, or barriers to prevent wheels from sliding off
– Handrails: both sides, 34–38 inches above ramp surface, continuous grip length

Common Applications

– Building entrances and lobbies
– Retail storefronts and restaurants
– Houses of worship
– Medical offices and healthcare facilities

Our Process

1. Site Evaluation — We measure the existing entrance geometry, grade changes, and available space to determine the ramp configuration.
2. Code Review — We confirm applicable ADA, NYC Building Code, and DOT requirements for your specific property type.
3. Design & Permitting — We prepare drawings and obtain required permits from the NYC Department of Buildings.
4. Site Preparation — Existing steps, paving, or landscaping that conflicts with the ramp footprint is removed.
5. Foundation Work — Concrete footings are installed where required for structural support.
6. Ramp Construction — Concrete forming, reinforcement, and placement are executed to the design specifications.
7. Surface Treatment — Non-slip finish is applied and detectable warning surfaces are installed.
8. Handrail Installation — Rails are set to the correct height and extension dimensions and anchored securely.
9. Final Inspection — The completed ramp is inspected against ADA and code requirements before sign-off.
